After the sudden passing of the iconic Jewish singer/songwriter Debbie Friedman on January 9, 2011, I felt a strong need to gather the community to remember her in a concert to celebrate her incredible contribution to contemporary Jewish music. Hundreds gathered as area musicians, guitarists, instrumentalists, song leaders and clergy joined together with Friedman fans and spent the afternoon singing together and sharing wonderful personal memories as we sang together as one voice in tribute to Debbie.
Cantors Kathy Sebo of Tiferet Israel, Misha Pisman of Park synagogue and myself, joined together in a cantata celebrating Israel’s 60th birthday; an original composition by Cleveland actress and author, Elaine Rembrandt.
In celebration of Temple Emanuel El’s 60th anniversary I presented a show created especially for the occasion. Hits from A Chorus Line, Funny Girl, The King and I, along with favorites from contemporary shows as Rent and Wicked were highlighted in this truly remarkable bima event.
I was delighted and honored to gather some of the best voices in Cleveland and join together for a cantors concert each year. With our varied styles and voices our concerts thrilled our audiences as we each sang Jewish classics and secular favorites including some comic relief. The concert always culminated with a grand finale piece that filled the auditorium with spirit and soul.
